Companion Animal Grief

Grieving man with his deceased pet's collar, showing sadness and loss The bond between you and your companion animal is one of the most uncomplicated and profound forms of love we experience. At Sugar Maple Counseling and Ecotherapy, offering online counseling in New York, I understand that these relationships are often just as close, and sometimes even closer, than those we have with other people. When that connection is severed, the heartbreak is real, deep, and deserving of recognition and its own space for healing.

Validating Your Heartbreak

Society often fails to recognize the gravity of losing a pet, which is a form of disenfranchised grief. However, I recognize that your mourning is valid and significant. Whether you are facing a sudden passing or the agonizing choice of euthanasia, I provide a warm, supportive environment to honor your animal’s memory. For young adults, especially, a pet is often a primary source of stability during major life changes. Losing that "anchor" can feel like losing your sense of safety, and I am here to help you find your footing again.

Advanced Healing through EMDR and IADC

While I incorporate several therapeutic methods, one of my focuses is on Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to help your brain process painful memories, reducing the "sting" of traumatic images or the heavy guilt that often follows a pet’s death. This can be particularly helpful if you are struggling with symptoms of anxiety.

I also integrate Induced After-Death Communication (IADC). This specialized approach, derived from EMDR, is specifically designed to help those struggling with the most intense phases of grief. It allows you to process the sadness and move toward a sense of peace and reconnection with the love you shared, rather than staying stuck in the pain of the goodbye. You can read more about my specific work with EMDR and IADC on my website.

Nature-Based Support and Skill Building

For clients in Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester counties, I offer Forest Therapy to help you find peace within the natural cycles of life. Throughout New York State, I provide online sessions incorporating DBT skills for distress tolerance and CBT to help manage intrusive thoughts. These tools ensure you have a "survival kit" for the most difficult days of mourning.

Rebuilding with Compassion

My mission at Sugar Maple Counseling and Ecotherapy is to help you integrate this loss into your life story. By combining deep clinical expertise with a genuine appreciation for the human-animal bond, I help you move from acute pain toward a place of resilient healing.
